College Kids provides Before and After School Care along with Vacation Care for school aged children up to 12 years. During school terms the child care centre in Calamvale is open from 6:30 am to 9:00 am, and 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm. During the vacation period, our centre opening times are from 6:30am to 6:30pm including pupil free days, but excluding public holidays.
Before School Care offers a range of stimulating activities to get your children’s minds warmed up leading into the school day. The After School Care program allows the children plan their own afternoon activities selected from a list provided and with consultation from parents, assistance with homework can be provided by our experienced and qualified educators.
Care is also provided for the school holidays to keep the children’s minds active and drive away some of the boredom of the long breaks. This holiday care offers a wide range of activities and excursions to put some variety into the holiday schedule.
My Time, Our Place
Our qualified educators plan experiences which develop children’s skills in all developmental areas and are a part of the My Time, Our Place Learning Framework. This framework puts children’s learning at the core and comprises of three inter-related elements: Principles, Practice and Learning Outcomes. All three elements are fundamental to school aged care pedagogy and curriculum decision-making. Fundamental to the Federal Government’s framework is a view of children’s lives as characteristics by Belonging, Being and Becoming.
The framework conveys the highest expectations for all school aged children’s learning and social development. It communicates these expectations through the following five Learning Outcomes:
- Children have a strong sense of identity
- Children are well connected with and contribute to their world
- Children have a strong sense of well being
- Children are confident and involved learners
- Children are effective communicators
Play activities planned by our educators allow children to naturally develop and have the opportunity to guide their own learning. Activity outcomes and individual observations on your child are documented in your children’s portfolio to assist in extending their skills and abilities.
Children have the opportunity for both indoor and outdoor play as part of the morning, afternoon and school holiday programs. The outdoor area is an essential part of the learning environment for children. All age groups utilise our specifically designed playgrounds to test their co-ordination, balance, skills, strength and social development in a fun and engaging environment.
Working in partnership with families, our educators use the learning outcomes to guide their planning for children’s learning. In order to engage children actively in learning, our educators identify the children’s strengths and interests, choose appropriate teaching strategies and design the learning environment.
Our routines allow time for individual play/learning, small group play/learning and large group sessions. Children’s language and literacy skills are further developed during these times, as children are involved in storytelling, drama, poems and games. Music also plays a large part during these sessions as children are able to experiment with dancing, singing and exercising their bodies. Science and cooking activities also further develops the children’s interest in the world around them and gives lifelong skills as they interact with texts and different technologies.
